Community

Community takes product placement to a whole other level by introducing the show’s sponsor Subway as an actual character. Subway, a new student at Greendale Community College, is introduced as a romantic interest for Britta, creating an entire subplot around the popular sandwich shop.
*WARNING: CURRENT SEASON'S SPOILERS AHEAD*
The product placement plot thickens in the show’s fifth and current season as the sandwich shop chain (not the student) threatens to buyout Greendale Community College. Multiple episodes are written around this conflict and the struggle reaches its climax in the season’s finale episode, as seen with this final video. What’s most interesting about this marketing and story-crafting technique is that the show ends up villainizing its sponsor. Community receives its sponsorship money so long as Subway’s name and products are shown, so their casting Subway as evil provides an interesting critique on corporate power. Much like its predecessor 30 Rock, Community provides a humorous satirical commentary on corporate control and big brand marketing.
